What is a XML Formatter?
An XML Formatter (pretty-printer) adds proper indentation and line breaks to raw or minified XML, making it human-readable. It also validates well-formedness — checking for matching tags, correct nesting, and proper attribute syntax — and can minify XML to reduce payload size.
How to Use It
- 1Paste your XML or upload an .xml file
- 2Click 'Format' to prettify with indentation, or 'Minify' to compress
- 3Select indentation style: 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or tabs
- 4Any syntax errors are highlighted with a description
Example
<root><item id='1'><name>Widget</name><price>99</price></item></root> formatted with 2-space indent becomes a clearly readable 6-line XML block. Minified back to one line for API transmission.
Why Use It
- Debug API XML responses that arrive as unreadable single-line strings
- Validate XML files before importing into databases or applications
- Minify XML config files to reduce bundle size in applications
- Review XML structure when building or testing SOAP API integrations
