What is a Java Formatter?

A Java Formatter auto-indents and cleans Java source code, normalizing brace placement, spacing around operators, and blank line usage according to standard Java style conventions (similar to Google Java Style Guide). It works on any Java code from Java 8 through Java 21.

How to Use It

  1. 1Paste Java code or upload a .java file
  2. 2Click 'Format' to apply standard Java formatting
  3. 3Copy the formatted code or download it as a .java file
  4. 4For large codebases, use your IDE's built-in formatter (IntelliJ/Eclipse) instead

Example

Pasting unindented Java code with inconsistent spacing → formatter applies consistent 4-space indentation, places opening braces on the same line as the method signature, and normalizes spaces around operators.

Why Use It

  • Clean up code before submitting to code review or open-source projects
  • Standardize formatting when merging code from multiple contributors
  • Quickly reformat code pasted from documentation or Stack Overflow
  • Prepare Java code samples for blog posts or technical documentation
